What is the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan?
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan is an option that helps you spread out what you pay for Medicare prescription drugs over the year.
It is designed for people with high medication costs, especially earlier in the year.
What this program does
- Lets you pay for covered Medicare prescription drugs through monthly bills
- Helps avoid large payments at the pharmacy
- Makes costs easier to manage month to month
What this program does not do
- It does not lower the total cost of your medications for the year
- It does not change your Medicare drug coverage
Important 2026 protections
- Your out-of-pocket costs for covered Medicare prescription drugs are capped at $2,100 for 2026
- After you reach this amount, you do not pay out-of-pocket for covered Part D drugs for the rest of the year
What changes if you enroll
- You usually do not pay the pharmacy when you pick up covered Medicare prescriptions
- Your Medicare drug plan sends you a monthly bill
- You still pay your monthly plan premium, if you have one
- Your monthly bill may change if your medications change
How to enroll
To enroll, you must contact your Medicare drug plan. You can:
- Call the member services number on the back of your plan card
- Call 1-800-MEDICARE and ask for help
When you call, say:
"I want to enroll in the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan."
By law, Medicare drug plans are required to offer this program and help you enroll.
